If you’ve read pretty much ANY of my articles on The Mabelhood Blog, you know we’re all about family time in this house! To us, doing things as a family is super important. Our kids are only young for so long, and we want to make sure we make memories with them, spend time with them, and show them how important family really is. Plus, whatever we do always ends up being a whole lot of fun!
So, with Family Day coming up this weekend, you can bet we’ll be spending the day hanging out together! I’m sure a lot of other families will be too. If you need some ideas for a day filled with family fun, I’ve put together a list below with some great ways to spend the day. Whether you’re an indoor family, an active family, or a family full of gamers – I’ve got ideas for every type of family.
Public Skates or Swims – If you’re hoping to keep everyone active on Family Day, check your local community pools and rinks. Most will have a special schedule set up for Family Day that includes family swims and public skates.
At Day at the Movies – If you’re a family full of movie fans, see what’s playing at your local theatre and enjoy an afternoon eating popcorn and candy in front of the big screen. Most theatres will schedule extra showings on Family Day.
Winter Fun – If your kids are anything like mine, they LOVE snow! Tobogganing, backyard snowman building, you name it! Why not make a family of snow people for Family Day? Dress them up and take pictures.
Board Game Marathon – If staying warm inside is more your thing, get out the board games and have a board game marathon! Our current favourites are Uno, The Game of Life Junior, Rush Zone, and The Gas Out Game! (We have boys, farting is apparently hilarious.) Maybe throw in some video gaming too! We love to play Mario Kart and Mario Party together. Our 9-year-old is a Mario Kart master!
Local Events – Go online and see what’s happening around your town/city on Family Day. A lot of places will plan events and festivals on Family Day weekend.
Weekend Getaway – If your family could use a little getaway together, book a last-minute weekend away somewhere. We were just at the big indoor waterpark in Niagara Falls and our kids LOVED it! (Okay, the adults loved it too.)
The idea behind Family Day is to slow down, take a step back from our regular schedules and enjoy time spent together as a family. It’s a day to celebrate the importance of families and family life, and that’s definitely something I fully support.
We can all get so busy with work, school, sports and activities that we sometimes don’t realize how much we need a day to just focus on our families. So, if you’re able, spend the day doing what you love, with the ones you love. Laugh, play, eat, talk, nap, dance, sing – whatever makes you happy. Just be together.
I read a quote online that said… “Family is not an important thing, it’s everything”. And I firmly believe that.
Happy Family Day!
