We live in a world with helicopter parents and apps that do everything for us, but we need to be teaching our kids actual skills. Some students have little to no understanding of how to cook a meal, manage their money, do laundry or even how to make a phone call for themselves! They\u2019re increasing having difficulty transitions from home to college, and that responsibility begins at home. The younger you can teach your kids these basic life skills the more confident they become overall. It\u2019s so important that parents don\u2019t do everything for our kids, we need to let them fail a little, we need to give them the knowledge needed to be independent. Here are some basic life skills to teach your tween or teen to set them up for success.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<strong><u>Transportation:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0How to safely use rideshare (Uber)\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Change the oil<\/li>\r\n<li>Change a car tire\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0How to pump gas\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Navigate the bus\/taxi system<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<strong><u>Finances:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0How to withdraw money\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Check account balance, understand a statement\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0How to responsibly use a credit card\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Understand what interest is\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Create and maintain a budget\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<strong><u>Social Skills:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0Tip in a restaurant\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0How to shake a hand, maintain eye contact, etc.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0How to call to book or change an appointment doctor, dentist (have a calendar, health card 3 ready, etc.)\u00a0 \u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>Household Maintenance:<\/u><\/strong><\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Turn the water off\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Set or adjust the thermostat\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Unclog a toilet\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Change a lightbulb\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Use basic tools for household repairs<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<strong><u>Health &amp; Wellness:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0Read a nutrition label\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Grocery Shop \/ Make healthy choices<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Basic cooking skills (boil pasta, safely cook meat, make rice)\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>\u00a0Administrative:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0Mail a package\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Address an envelope \/ Buy and use postage stamps\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Refill a subscription\u00a0 \u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<strong><u>Career &amp; Schooling:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0(most appropriate for high school students)\u00a0<\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0Apply for student loans\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0College Applications\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Writing in complete sentences!<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Write a resume and cover letter<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>Medical:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0Understand the difference between doctor appt, Urgent Care, and the ER\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Basic First Aid Training\u00a0 \u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0How to handle medical emergencies\/call 911 etc.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>Personal:<\/u><\/strong><\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0Choosing appropriate clothing for the occasion\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0How to do laundry\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Personal grooming: shaving tips, product selection etc.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<strong><u>Friends and family:<\/u><\/strong><\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0Valuing relationships and people in their lives.<\/li>\r\n<li>Maintaining healthy family relationships (call your sister on her birthday!)<\/li>\r\n<li>Party etiquette, including how to be host and guest (don\u2019t show up empty-handed)<\/li>\r\n<li>Respecting other people\u2019s views, no matter how different from your own. You don\u2019t have to agree, but you must be kind.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<strong><u>Personal Safety:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0(applies to themselves and their friends)\u00a0 \u00a0<\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0Using common sense; letting friends\/family know where you\u2019re going\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0How to get out of an uncomfortable situation\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0The importance of saying no\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0The importance of respecting when others say no\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<strong><u>Tips for parents:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/h6>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>You may feel like doing everything for your kids is helping them. The opposite is true. Making them do things themselves is setting them up for success in life. It&#8217;s so crucial that we&#8217;re teaching our tweens and teens basic life skills. By learning how to take care of themselves, with basic skills, your teaching them how to care for others, how to contribute to the community and how to have the confidence to manage themselves effectively in the world.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Stop doing everything for your tweens and teens. If they\u2019re looking for a summer job, make them responsible for the whole process, from searching to phone calls. Please DO NOT do it for them; you\u2019re not helping them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In a store, make them approach the teller and make purchases; this can begin at a very young age.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Encourage them to make intelligent choices and make sure they understand that poor choices come with consequences.
