When finances are tight, it starts to feel like you may be buying things you don\u2019t need. Often this is the case; other times, you shock yourself with how many you need (I\u2019m looking at you burp cloths!). You\u2019ll receive many of the same gifts (blankets!), and sometimes you don\u2019t get the gift you want. Here is a list of the must-haves versus the nice-to-haves. Plus, a few don\u2019t bother items.<\/p>\n<p>If your budget allows for the nice-to-haves, they\u2019ll make your life a little easier. Get yourself multiple changing pads and leave them around the house \u2013 you can change on the couch, the floor, or wherever is most convenient.<\/p>\n<h6><strong><u>DIAPER CHANGING:<\/u><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><strong>Must-haves:<\/strong><br \/>\nDiapers (2 packs to begin)<br \/>\nHealing\/diaper rash ointment<br \/>\nChanging pad (or towel)<br \/>\nWipes and washcloths (10)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nice to haves\/Makes a great gift<\/strong><br \/>\nDiaper pail<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t bother:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Pee teepee<br \/>\nWipes warmer (even the Queen of England never had a wipes warmer. Your baby will be fine)<\/p>\n<h6><strong><u>CLOTHING:<\/u><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><strong>Must-haves:<\/strong><br \/>\nOnesies (7 or more)<br \/>\nRompers (2-4)<br \/>\nPyjamas\/sleeping gowns (7 or more)<br \/>\nSun hat<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weather dependent:<\/strong><br \/>\nWool hat<br \/>\nMittens<br \/>\nSnowsuit<br \/>\nCar seat cover<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nice to haves\/Makes a great gift<\/strong><br \/>\nScratch-proof mittens (this is the type of item that you only buy once you realize whether you need it or not)<br \/>\nShirt &amp; pants\/shorts sets\/ cute dresses<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t bother:<\/strong><br \/>\nBaby clothing hangers &#8211; you\u2019ll likely just be folding and putting into a drawer, so as a newborn, don\u2019t bother with the teeny tiny hangers.<br \/>\nSocks &#8211; Ok, maaaybe 1 or 2 pairs, but most baby clothing has feet. Socks don\u2019t stay on and good luck finding them. If you <em>do<\/em> buy socks- make sure they all match, because you don\u2019t want to waste your time matching pair.<\/p>\n<h6><strong><u>BATHING:<\/u><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><strong>Must-haves:<\/strong><br \/>\nwashcloths (5 or 6)<br \/>\nBaby soap and shampoo<br \/>\nbaby brush (if babe has hair!)<br \/>\nNail clippers or file<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nice to haves\/Makes a great gift<\/strong><br \/>\nInfant tub<br \/>\nHooded towels<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t bother:<\/strong><br \/>\nBaby powder (why do they even make this still?)<\/p>\n<h6><strong><u>OUT AND ABOUT:<\/u><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><strong>Must-haves:<br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mabelslabels.ca\/en_CA\/by-occasion\/baby-labels.html\">Name Labels<\/a>&#8211; because nobody wants a germy mix-up! Plus, you picked such a great name, show it off!<br \/>\nBaby car seat<br \/>\nStroller<br \/>\nBaby carrier\/sling<br \/>\nDiaper bag<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nice to haves\/Makes a great gift<br \/>\n<\/strong>Insulated milk carrier (otherwise, just use lunch bag and some ice packs)<\/p>\n<h6><strong><u>BABY and MAMA CARE:<\/u><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><strong>Must-haves:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Infant playmat<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Pacifiers (and <a href=\"https:\/\/mabelslabels.ca\/en_CA\/pacifier-labels.html\">these!<\/a>)<br \/>\nThermometer<br \/>\nNasal aspirator (this seems like you don\u2019t need it- until you do)<br \/>\nInfant medicine (just a few basics to cover you until you can see a doctor: saline spray, infant pain meds, ointments)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nice to haves\/Makes a great gift<\/strong><br \/>\nNursing pillow<br \/>\nSwing or vibrating\/ rocking seat<\/p>\n<h6><strong><u>FEEDING:<\/u><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>This list will change for everyone, some babies may need a nipple guard, some mamas might want to supplement. Here is a basic idea of what you need to be with, but your list may grow as your feeding needs change and you and baby find your own groove. <u><\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>Must-haves for breastfed babies:<\/strong><u><br \/>\n<\/u>Burp cloths (6 or more)<br \/>\nBreast milk storage bags<br \/>\nBreast pump<br \/>\nNursing bra<\/p>\n<p><strong>Must-haves for bottle fed babies:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Baby bottles (8 or more)<br \/>\nBottle cleaning brush or a dishwasher basket<br \/>\nFormula (for a month)<br \/>\nCotton bibs (6 or more)<br \/>\nMilk storage bags (if using expressed milk)<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/mabelslabels.ca\/en_CA\/baby-bottle-labels.html\">Baby bottle labels<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nice to haves\/Makes a great gift for bottle fed babies:<\/strong><br \/>\nBottle sterilizer<br \/>\nBottle warmer<\/p>\n<p>Feeding is the most difficult to buy for, it\u2019s best to get your journey started knowing you\u2019ll need to make some runs to the store to try a new product or get what you need. Kidding aside, this is a suggested list, everyone&#8217;s situation and priorities are different, and you&#8217;ll ease into what works best for you and your family.
