Learning is now viewed as a complex process, influenced by an individual\u2019s own cognitive, emotional and environmental factors, as well as prior experience. Research shows that people have different preferences and strengths in how they take in and process information and these preferences are sometimes referred to as&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.learningstyles.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>learning styles<\/strong><\/a>. We use learning styles to describe and help us understand the different ways in which children learn.<\/p>\n<p> <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Although sometimes controversial, some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00091383.2010.503139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">studies<\/a> have shown that accommodating a child&#8217;s learning style can increase his or her performance at school. Here, I hope to share some of my insight and experience as a teacher, and to equip you with some practical knowledge on how you can asses and support your child\u2019s learning style at home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the different types of Learning Styles?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Based on observations and studies, researchers have formed three different categories of learning styles, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/pages\/article\/vak-learning-styles.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VAK<\/a> for short:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;V is for VISUAL:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visual learners receive new information best when it is presented in a visual format, like in a diagram, map or pictures\/images<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A is for AUDITORY:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Auditory learners understand new ideas and concepts best when they hear the information, like in a song or from a description read out loud<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>K is for KINESTHETIC (tactual, physical):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kinesthetic learners discover best when they are using their hands or bodies. This is a common feature of most early learners, particularly in preschool and kindergarten<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16007 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/3295812\/Imported_Blog_Media\/Learning-1sm.jpg\" alt=\"learning-1sm\" width=\"432\" height=\"288\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>What type of learner are you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below are a few key characteristics for each learning style and some strategies you can use at home with your child(ren):<\/p>\n<p><strong>Signs that your child might be a VISUAL LEARNER:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They like solving puzzles and enjoy leafing through books, especially ones with pictures<\/li>\n<li>They are drawn to artwork, posters and other vibrant displays on the wall<\/li>\n<li>They demonstrate keen powers of observation and don\u2019t miss a trick!<\/li>\n<li><strong>STRATEGIES TO USE WITH VISUAL LEARNERS:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Incorporate diagrams, charts, graphs or pictures into their school work<\/li>\n<li>For test revision, use flash cards and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainboxx.co.uk\/a3_aspects\/pages\/mindmap.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mind Maps<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Use coloured highlighters to emphasize key words or to underline main concepts<\/li>\n<li>Using symbols instead of words may assist in memorization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Signs that your child might be an AUDITORY LEARNER:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They gravitate towards music, songs, instruments, etc. and can&nbsp;learn a song just by hearing it once<\/li>\n<li>They can usually follow verbal instructions immediately after only hearing it once or twice<\/li>\n<li><strong>STRATEGIES TO USE WITH AUDITORY LEARNERS:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Play music or white noise in the background while completing a task<\/li>\n<li>Allow them to \u201ctalk it out\u201d \u2013 have them explain their newfound knowledge or describe a task<\/li>\n<li>Use audio materials and have audio books&nbsp;readily available at home<\/li>\n<li>Use stories, anecdotes, puns, jokes, songs from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/?hl=en&amp;gl=CA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">You Tube<\/a>, rhymes or raps to&nbsp;aid with learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Signs that your child might be a&nbsp;KINAESTHETIC&nbsp;LEARNER:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They constantly squirm while completing homework, fiddling with equipment<\/li>\n<li>They best learn while completing \u201chands on\u201d activities<\/li>\n<li>They enjoy field trips and being able to \u201cmove around\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>STRATEGIES TO USE WITH KINAESTHETIC LEARNERS:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Keep a healthy supply of art materials \u2013 scissors, construction paper and glue are great to make collages or mosaics<\/li>\n<li>Use beads or other suitable objects like fingers when learning how to count<\/li>\n<li>Role playing is a great way to get him or her out of their chair and engaged<\/li>\n<li>Use materials like&nbsp;Lego&nbsp;for math activities (making a bar chart&nbsp;is fun!)<\/li>\n<li>Using&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainboxx.co.uk\/a3_aspects\/pages\/stickynotes.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sticky notes<\/a>&nbsp;to brainstorm ideas is a great kinesthetic activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16009 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/3295812\/Imported_Blog_Media\/Learning-2sm.jpg\" alt=\"learning-2sm\" width=\"432\" height=\"648\"><\/p>\n<p>Whatever you do, make sure the activities are developmentally appropriate for your child\u2019s age and grade level. And don\u2019t worry if your child doesn\u2019t fall into any one specific category or if they demonstrate characteristics of more than one learning style. Learning styles are not permanently fixed. As a student grows, matures and develops both physically and intellectually, their preference of learning style may evolve as well. Re-evaluating a student&#8217;s learning style on an annual basis is a good way to check-in with their academic development and be sure to discuss this with your child\u2019s teacher.<\/p>\n<p>There are various on-line tools you can use to&nbsp;discover&nbsp;your child\u2019s preferred learning style, but I like&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainboxx.co.uk\/a3_aspects\/pages\/vak_quest.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brainboxx&#8217;s VAK<\/a>&nbsp;questionnaire the best as it allows students to see their scores for all three of the learning styles for comparison.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The idea that every student learns differently has gained widespread recognition in education theory and classroom management strategy over the past half a century.
