I was born less than a month before Christmas, and my brother was born less than a month after Christmas. Growing up I always remember my parents commenting on how it can sometimes be frustrating having children born so close to the biggest holiday of the year. In my case, they were planning Christmas gifts but also had to buy me a birthday gift around the same time. In my brother’s case, they had to buy him a gift right after he already received everything he ever wanted!
Having a birthday in December is typically seen as a negative thing, and not just from a gift giving perspective. People are usually busier during the holiday season, so no one has time to celebrate December birthdays. Birthdays might be overlooked because everyone is so focused on the holidays. Over the years, you hear a lot of negativity about having a December birthday, but I think it’s time we change that!
I don’t think it’s all that bad, so I’ve come up with a list of POSITIVE things about December babies. So, if you have a child born in December, or you’re expecting a baby during the holiday season, here are 7 reasons why having a December baby is the BEST!
All The Parties
December is the month of parties! This year might be a bit different, but typically there are a lot of festive gatherings during the month of December – which can’t be a bad thing, right? A couple people I know have birthdays on December 23rd, and one of them likes to have what she calls a ‘Birthmas’ celebration – a birthday and holiday party all rolled into one! It’s something fun you might want to consider if you have a little one with a birthday within days of Christmas.
Days Off School
If your child is born towards the last half of December, they will NEVER have to go to school on their birthday. My kids are always asking me If they can stay home on their birthday. They seem to think it should be their own personal holiday! With a late December birthday though, they basically do have their own personal holiday – and they’ll LOVE that!
Awesome Star Sign
If you’re born in December, there’s a pretty good chance you’re a Sagittarius – which is the BEST zodiac sign! I may be a little bias here being a Sagittarius myself, but I don’t think I’ve met one I don’t like! We’re known for being ambitious, optimistic, honest and adventurous. Those born in the later part of December are Capricorns, which also a great star sign. Capricorns are typically hardworking, loyal, ambitious and patient.
It’s the Happiest Time of the Year!
As they say…it’s the most wonderful time of the year! There are decorations everywhere, sparkling lights, festive music playing wherever you go, and everyone is feeling jolly and merry all month long. Nobody else can say that about their birthday month! One friend of mine has a December 12th birthday, and she loves their family tradition of going and picking out the tree on her birthday and decorating the tree while listening/singing Christmas carols and drinking hot chocolate. Her birthday has always signaled the beginning of the Christmas festivities! It’s definitely a great way to celebrate.
It’s Like Double Christmas
A friend of mine has a little guy with a birthday 6 days before Christmas. She said he absolutely loves having a birthday so close to Christmas because for him it’s ‘Double Christmas’! Meaning, if he didn’t get what he really wanted for his birthday, he knows he only has to wait another week for it!
Longer Lives
Those born in December are known for living longer lives! Several studies, including one in the Journal of Ageing Research, have shown that people born in December are more likely to live to 100! Plus, the study also showed that December babies are nicer people, complain less, and are also healthier!
Youngest in Their Class
Why is this a positive you might ask? Well, first of all, teachers are likely to cut the youngest kids in the class a little slack in those first couple years of school. But also, multiple studies have shown that the youngest students in the class are often the smartest! Because they have to work hard to keep up with their peers, they end up surpassing them in most cases.
As you can see, there are plenty of positives to being born in final month of the year! What do you love about being born in December or having a child with a December birthday? Let us know in the comments below!
