The winter blues. Those feelings that creep up in the middle of winter and sometimes…we just can’t shake ‘em. They can be a very real thing for some people. Winter is cold, filled with snow, and depending on where you live – A LOT of darkness. Plenty of people feel a little down during the winter months due to being stuck inside more, or not dealing with the cold very well. But I say…winter blues can take a hike! (You can literally take a winter hike if you want! That will help too!)

Now full disclosure here, winter is definitely NOT my favourite season. It doesn’t even rank in my top three. But being the eternal optimist that I am, I’m determined to make the most out of whatever season we happen to be in. So, I’m here to share some tips to hopefully help you feel more relaxed and happy during these chilly, snowy months.

Get Outside – If your kids are anything like mine, they LOVE snow. It’s pretty hard to be gloomy when you see those little faces light up while they play in all that white stuff. Build a snowman together or head to a hill and go tobogganing. It’s also been proven that spending time outside in the fresh air will boost your mood!

Cozy Up – Think pillows, blankets, candles, snacks and your favourite show on Netflix. See? Being inside isn’t all bad, right?

Comfort Food – Winter is the perfect season to enjoy all those comfort foods you love. Make a giant pot of soup. Get out that slow cooker and fill your home with the delicious aroma of your favourite meals. A yummy, comforting meal will make anyone feel better.

Reading Nook – I recently created a space in our home for a reading nook. It consists of a comfy chair, a cozy blanket, a lamp overhead and a little table beside me for books and tea. It makes me smile.

Hot Drinks – I love a big mug of tea or hot chocolate to warm up on a cold day. Maybe after an afternoon playing outside with the kids? Our guys are always excited to enjoy a mug of hot chocolate after playing in the snow. With marshmallows of course!

Bath Time – If you’re a bath person, make some time for it. I love baths all year round, but I definitely find myself taking more hot, relaxing baths during the winter months. Grab a glass of wine, some candles, maybe a book or a magazine, and enjoy a little time for yourself to clear your mind and cheer you up.

Weekend Away – If you just can’t seem to shake those blues, plan a mini-getaway. Whether it’s the whole family or a romantic weekend, some time away will lift your spirits. Need an idea? We’re heading to an indoor waterpark in February for a couple days…where it feels like summer inside!

I know winter can feel like a lifetime if you’re not a fan, but I’m hoping these tips will help boost your mood, even if it’s only temporary.
