Backyard BBQ’s with family and friends are hands-down one of my favourite things about summer! I love getting everyone together to catch up, laugh, play with all the kids, have a few adult beverages, and of course, EAT!

If your family is anything like mine, there is always way too much food at these types of gatherings. No matter who is hosting, most of us usually bring an appetizer or a dessert for everyone to enjoy. I’ve always been a big fan of dips and finger foods, so I’m all about the appetizers! 

Below, I’m sharing my two go-to appetizer recipes for almost ANY kind of event. In the past, I’ve made them for work lunches, holiday gatherings, birthday parties – you name it! And they always go over REALLY well! Both recipes are great to make all year-round, but I find they’re extra great for summer parties! They’re delicious and oh-so easy to make (that’s the best part!)

First up, Taco Dip! I know it’s tempting, but try not to double dip! (Although we all know the kids will!)


Taco Dip Recipe




  • 1 block of cream cheese
  • 1 container of sour cream
  • 1 packet of taco seasoning OR ¼ cup of taco seasoning
  • 1 large jar of salsa
  • Shredded cheese – pick your favourite!
  • Tortilla chips
  • Chopped peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes or olives (optional)



  1. Place cream cheese in a microwaveable bowl and heat until softened
  2. Once soft, add sour cream and mix well – either by hand or with a mixer
  3. Add in taco seasoning and mix well
  4. Pour mixture into a 9×13 baking dish and spread evenly – this is your bottom layer
  5. Pour salsa on top and shake gently until it covers – this is your second layer
  6. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top, as well as diced veggies (if desired)
  7. Chill in fridge for 20-30 minutes before serving
  8. Open the bag of tortilla chips for dipping and enjoy!


Up next, another simple summer BBQ favourite – Salsa Pinwheels! I took a double batch of these to a party last year and everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, was raving over them. I spent the next couple of days responding to texts and Facebook messages asking me to send them the recipe for “those awesome little rolled-up thingys”. Honestly, that explains them perfectly!


Salsa Pinwheels Recipe

  • 10 large flour tortillas
  • 1 cup of chopped peppers and onions
  • 5 blocks of softened cream cheese
  • 1/3 cup of salsa
  • ½ cup of shredded cheddar cheese



  1. Place cream cheese in a microwaveable bowl and heat until softened
  2. Once soft, mix with salsa.
  3. Spread mixture on tortillas and top with veggies and cheese
  4. Roll up and chill in fridge for a few hours – overnight if you can!
  5. Cut off the end of each tortilla and cut into bite sized pieces. Each tortilla should give you about 6-8 pieces.
  6. Enjoy!
