If you were to ask my boys, they would tell you that kids born in the summer months are the luckiest because they NEVER have to go to school on their birthday. My oldest kind of got the short end of the stick when it comes to birthdays though. He was born in early September, and his birthday has been the first day of school on more than one occasion throughout the years. In fact, he started JK on his 4th birthday. In my defense though, he was 10 days late! He was supposed to be an August baby. I blame him.

Now while I don’t have any summer babies of my own, I do have three nephews and one niece who were born during the summer months. Two of them were born under the sign, Cancer. While exploring the stereotypical characteristics of Cancers, I would have to say they are mostly known for their big emotions. It has also been said that Cancers are the most challenging sign to get to know. But we can try, right?

Now until July 22nd, we’re celebrating Cancer. What can you expect if you’re raising a Cancer? Well, let’s see what all the experts say! First, we’ll start with the basics of the Cancer sign.

Birthdate – June 21 – July 22

Element – Water Sign

Symbol – The Crab

As for personality, only time will tell for sure. But if you have a little Cancer in the house and would like a little insight, below are some positive and negative personality traits traditionally associated with the Cancer sign. (You can find the whole list here)

Positive Traits

Loyal – If you’re looking for a faithful friend, find a Cancer! Cancers are known for being loyal friends and are always willing to lend a helping hand to those they care about.

Caring – Your might notice your little crab is very nurturing and has a sensitive nature. Cancers are very caring individuals, but they also require care in return to feel completely happy.

Sense of Humour – If you have a Cancer in your life, you probably already know they have a great sense of humour. They’re very funny and are good at making people smile, and they’re also good at understanding jokes and laughing at themselves.

Protective – The crab is a very protective sign. If they have affection for another person, they have an overwhelming feeling to protect them. They value family and friends, so they’ll sacrifice everything to save them and keep them safe.

Intuitive – Cancers tend to make decisions based on their intuition more than anything else. They are very good at reading people and their intuition can help them avoid being deceived.

Negative Traits

Pessimism – When Cancers get moody, they get pessimistic. As a general rule – the glass is always half empty for Cancers.

Insecure – Since Cancers are ruled by their emotions, they can often feel insecure in certain situations. Be sure to give your little crab plenty of encouragement if you know they’re in a situation where they may be uncomfortable.

Overly Sensitive – You know those people who don’t get offended very often? Well, Cancers are not one of those people. They are sensitive souls, and it doesn’t take much for them to cry.

Since they say Cancers can be hard to get to know, a cheat sheet would come in handy, right? So, according to the experts, here are some likes and dislikes of stereotypical Cancers.

Likes

Art – Break out the paint and crayons! Your little crab has a creative side, and they apparently love to express it in an artistic way. So, start googling arts and crafts you can do with your Cancer.

Home-Based Hobbies – Cancers like their hobbies to be close to home. So maybe start trying a few new hobbies around the house like gardening or puzzles and see what lights up your little one’s face.

Relaxing Near Water – Think cottages and beaches! Cancers are a water sign after all.

Dislikes

Strangers – This isn’t a bad thing for little crabs! If they naturally don’t like strangers, hopefully you shouldn’t have to worry about them going near people they don’t know.

Criticism from Mom – Make sure you choose your words carefully, Momma! Apparently, your Cancer doesn’t take too well to be criticized by Mom. To be fair though, does anyone?!

It looks like Cancers can be tough little nuts to crack. But one thing is for certain when it comes to your little Cancer – you have a friend for life!
