I’m not a big “resolutions” person but I certainly like to reflect on the things I’ve seen over the past year – whether in my travels, work or even what my friends have shared online.
Do you have a kid who has an unusual interest? We parents are constantly surrounded by kids who play hockey, do competitive dance or take horseback riding lessons. But how do you support your kiddo who has an unconventional hobby?
Seventy-eight. Yes, that is the number of Halloween costumes I’ve had to deal with in my parenting career. Certainly there have been costumes that have been re-used and handed down, but regardless, parenting six children through a combined total of 78 trick-or-treat nights has not been without its share of costume adventures and misadventures.
My kids have often encountered little friends along the way who seem to have a few “quirks.” The kid might not have a formal diagnosis, but as I say to my kids, “let’s make sure we’re extra patient, there’s something ‘up’ with this little friend.”

Several years ago, my now teenagers went off to sleep-away camp for the first time. On top of learning about getting organized for camp (the fun part), I also had to prepare everyone (OK, me) emotionally for being without my little darlings (the hard part). My newly minted eight-year-old will be going to sleep-away camp for the first time, for two weeks at the end of August. He will be my sixth child to attend sleep-away camp, and I find the same old worries creeping in. I knew I had to prepare myself for kids going to sleep-away camp. So, I’m reminding myself of three things: He might evolve This kid is my picky eater. I’m pretty sure he will starve for the entire two weeks. While one side of me is convinced of this, the other side knows that he might just start eating what everyone else is eating…
I get interviewed a lot about Mabel’s Labels and the number one question I always get asked is “why did you name the company Mabel’s Labels?”. It’s actually a question I dread because the answer is not very interesting – quite simply it was for branding purposes.
