With the summer months now upon us, we’ll be getting outside more, swimming, and enjoying the hot weather. However, we must never forget that anytime we’re near water, it’s important to remember the dangers that can come with it. Swim and water safety tips for kids are crucial to remember in the summer months, and so important to brush up on your swim and water safety skills.
As you spend time in the water, it is essential to remember the importance of swim safety. Being knowledgeable about swimming and water safety can spell the difference between a fun time in the water or an increased risk of drowning, whether in a pool, river, or lake.
We spoke with Bear Paddle infant swim lessons, where they teach basic water safety. They reminded us that learning how to swim is a gradual process that can be improved over time. Children can start with swimming lessons as early as six months old. They’ll learn different skills appropriate to their age and level as they progress.

Before heading off to the beach or summer camp or even poolside, there is always safety to consider. Regardless of your child’s swim level, whether an experienced swimmer or just learning, these reminders are essential and always prompt your child before heading out for a fun day on the water.
Here are their top tips for summer water safety:
–Warm up and perform stretches before going into the water. This will help your child loosen up and make their joints nimbler. It also lets blood flow better to the muscles and prevents injury.
–Follow a buddy system while in the water and never swim alone. Only swim in designated areas where a lifeguard or peers can easily see you.
–Adult supervision is always encouraged. Don’t rely on water safety devices like water wings, swim rings, inflatable items, and other devices.
–Wear proper swim attire that will let you move freely in the water.
–Inspect the deepness of the water and always know your limits.
–Be aware of where you are swimming, especially with waves. Swimming on a beach is different because of the undertows and currents. Keep your distance from strong waves that can knock you down and push you to the ocean floor.
–Check the weather conditions. Avoid going to the beach when there are thunderstorm forecasts.
–Face the waves; never turn your back on them. Doing so lets you know what’s coming and prepares you for the pressure or intensity of the wave.
–Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water before you go for a swim.
–Be aware of what’s in the water. Be aware of the ocean life you may encounter while at the beach, including barnacles, clams, and jellyfish.
