January is famous for self-reflection and setting resolutions for an improved year. This concept of New Year’s resolutions can be extended to students in the form of educational goals.
While January marks the start of a brand new year, in actuality, students are re-entering the classroom with half the school year behind them. Parents and students can sit down together to go over progress from September onwards, and make a plan for the coming year.
Here are 10 suggestions from the Teachers on Call team on making learning resolutions and keeping them!
1. Write down all goals
After a productive brainstorming session, ensure all academic goals are written down on paper or typed out and saved on computer. Be sure to place in a safe place.
2. Track these goals throughout the year
The key is to track these targets periodically throughout the school year to ensure they stick. Parents and students can re-visit the goals they initially wrote down to monitor progress.
3. Improve time management skills
Using effective time management strategies will help ensure a successful school year. Encourage students to plan ahead to meet and complete all deadlines on time. There are many great tools that can help keep kids organized.
4. Get organized
Organization is crucial for academic success. Students are encouraged to use agendas, planners, study calendars and organizational apps to keep them on track.
5. Avoid electronics during study time
Unless being used as a study tool, electronics should be put away during study time. Cell phones are one of the biggest culprits for distracting students from their work.
6. Attempt all homework
It’s important for students not to get discouraged on harder homework questions. Always motivate them to try their best to attempt a solution versus leaving a blank answer. A trick is to highlight the unknown area to signify that further support is needed.
7. Ask for help
Encourage learners to ask questions if they need further help and clarification on core concepts. This can be in the form of peer tutors, professional tutors, homework clubs, family members and teachers.
8. Encourage extracurricular interests
Outside interests in sports, academics and the arts help students achieve balance and become well-rounded learners.
9. Get extra credit with apps
To make learning fun, try incorporating apps when all the homework is complete. Here is a list of some of our favourite apps for math, science and French.
10. Engage your child in STEM
Science, technology, engineering, and math, also known as STEM, is a popular educational topic. Foster your child’s interest in the subject at school and at home. Here are some of our suggestions to encourage STEM.
